The Merthyr Rising 1831 - Merthyr Red week 3rd - 6th June 2010

The Red Flag was first raised in these islands during the Merthyr insurrection of 1831 - see the video I made four years ago below on the history of the Merthyr Rising which is dedicated to Merthyr's Communists.

I also speak about the importance of Merthyr in British history in my speech in celebration of the life of Claudia Jones the United States Black Communist leader in Brixton in March of this year see :

Here is a poem I wrote some years ago about Merthyr which I publish in memory of Red week in Merthyr:

The Working Class Camelot - Knights of Merthyr True

Arthur is a name that in Wales brings mythical fame
But the Arthur of which I speak from Merthyr he did hail

Arthur from Merthyr was a comrade true
Merthyr's working class tradition was his heartfelt pride

Dic Penderryn - remember his dying words
"O Lord here is injustice" these words makes our hearts beat faster.

For working class justice is the democratic fight
Lets celebrate the Arthur's from our Camelot who fought the good fight

Arthur Horner being
one - and Arthur Jones being two

Hero's of the working class - Knights of Merthyr true

P.S. Arthur Horner and Arthur Jones are communists from Merthyr

A Red Salute for the work of Gethin 'Iestyn' Gruffydd Welsh Remembrancer. For more information on Merthyr Red week visit his site :
