EU will protect and preserve Iran Nuclear Deal says Federica Mogherini

Democracy and Class Struggle is not optimistic that the EU will stand up against US and Israel offensive on Iran Nuclear Deal in longer term   - if it did it would deepen US Europe contradictions and we would welcome that. We agree it is a litmus test for EU as an independent voice.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has said that the 28-nation bloc will “protect and preserve” Iran’s historic nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries. She further stressed that the deal is neither unilateral nor bilateral, meaning that it cannot be renegotiated by one party alone. This is while Donald Trump threatened during his election campaign that he would “tear up” the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or try to renegotiate its terms if elected US president.

An author and political scientist believes the EU’s statement on the Iran nuclear agreement is very “critical,” adding that it should serve as a “wake-up call” to Trump that the deal enjoys international support.

“I think it is expected timely statement by the EU high representative that has been echoed by the other leaders of the European Union … who have solidly backed the Iran nuclear deal,” Kaveh Afrasiabi told Press TV in an interview on Thursday.

He also noted the European Union which is an “important pillar” of international politics is “very concerned” about the signs of irrationalism from the incoming US administration.

However, he said, there is already a big division within the Trump team on the Iran deal, arguing that the accord will remain in place.

Afrasiabi further stated Iran’s nuclear agreement is a “litmus test” for the European Union and its endurance and viability as an important voice in international affairs.

According to the analyst, the nuclear deal is not the only challenge Trump has posed for the European Union, given the fact that he has also threatened to dismantle the European-American alliance and has supported the disintegration of the EU.

He further predicted that Trump will abide by the nuclear deal, asserting that the EU and other voices can be very “instrumental” in swaying his administration against this destructive rhetoric against the JCPOA.
