North Korea’s delegation to South Korea is led by Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of a key Communist Party committee dealing with inter-Korea relations and a former head of the North’s military intelligence service.
Kim Yong Chol brought with him Choe Kang Il, deputy director of the U.S. affairs division in North Korea’s foreign ministry.
Ivanka Trump is accompanied by Allison Hooker, the Korea director on the National Security Council and a key player in the White House’s policy on North Korea.
Hooker met Kim Yong Chol, who was then head of the North’s military intelligence service, in Pyongyang in 2014 when she went there to secure the release of two Americans detained by North Korea.
Democracy and Class Struggle does not have high hopes of this meeting (if it actually happens) in view of new provocative US actions.
Its success will depend on inter Korean relations restricting freedom of action for United States on the Korean Peninsula - if that does not happen - we are nearer to war than we think - certainly as close as 1994
Looking back over this troubled history, the United States proved remarkably resistant to cooperating with North Korea to reduce nuclear risks in the region.
Instead, from late 1991 until the summer of 1994, it reflexively favored coercion over dialogue.
